Hi, I am Lumen Constance Hirwa, a sophomore interested in neuroscience and psychology. Throughout my time with my family, I learned a lot about emotions and how our experiences shape the way we interact with people around us. When I joined Bridge2Rwanda, a gap year program, I met friends with the same experience and that gave me the courage to learn more about emotions and prioritize my mental health regardless of what is relatively known to be the truth. In doing so, I started exploring poetry which gave me the voice to express my feelings and share my stories around women’s rights, body images, relationships, and family. Since then, I have had an interest in psychology and I aspire to help families in building a bond that’s based on our emotional attachment rather than business matters. Through this psychology class and other higher-level classes, I look forward to learning more about the parent-child relationship and how fundamental it is in one’s later life. Most importantly, I would like to explore childhood traumas, the impacts of peer pressure, happiness, and trust.
